Stop Cramming Before the Gig. Science Says It Does Not Work.
Spaced retrieval is one of the most replicated findings in memory research. Three 15-minute sessions across a week beat a 2-hour cram session the night before every time. Here is how to schedule your practice so the songs actually hold.
The gig is Saturday. It is Thursday night. The setlist has been sitting in your email for two weeks, but between the day job, the midweek rehearsal, and life, you have not touched half the songs. You block out Friday evening for a long run. Two hours, maybe three, maybe until your voice gives out. You go to bed feeling exhausted and vaguely confident.
Saturday night, second set, fourth song. The bridge evaporates.
Cramming feels like it should work. You put in the hours. You run the songs until they feel automatic. The problem is that the feeling of fluency you get from massed practice is not the same as durable recall, and the research has been clear on this for over a century.
The Forgetting Curve Does Not Care About Your Deadline
Hermann Ebbinghaus documented the basic shape of forgetting in 1885: newly learned material fades along an exponential curve, fastest in the hours and days immediately after learning, then more slowly over time.1
A modern replication confirmed the pattern: a significant share of newly learned material is lost within the first 24 hours, with continued decay across the first week when there is no review.2
This means the Friday night cram session is fighting a curve that started before you even sat down. The songs you learned two weeks ago and never reviewed have already decayed past the point where a single long session can restore them. You are not reinforcing existing memory. You are re-learning material that has already faded, under time pressure, with no room for the consolidation that happens between practice sessions.

The spacing effect is one of the strongest findings in cognitive psychology. Distributed practice, spreading study sessions over time, consistently outperforms massed practice for long-term retention, even when total practice time is held constant.3
A 2021 study specifically tested the spacing effect on song learning. The researchers found that when practice sessions were spaced over time rather than massed into a single session, memory for lyrics was significantly stronger.4 The benefit held as long as the spacing interval crossed a meaningful threshold. The gap between reviews has to be more than a few hours.
What makes spacing work is not magic. It is consolidation. Between practice sessions, your brain is actively stabilizing and reorganizing the memory traces you formed during the session. This process, memory consolidation, happens during sleep, during rest, during time away from the material. When you cram, you deny your brain the consolidation window. The material feels fluent in the moment because it is still in short-term or working memory. But it has not been transferred to long-term storage, and under the pressure of a live performance, the shallow memory trace collapses.
What a Real Practice Schedule Looks Like
For a gigging musician managing a repertoire of 30 or more songs, the ideal schedule is not a single long session. It is short, targeted reviews spaced across the lead-up to the gig.

- Day 1: First full run-through from memory
- Day 3: Second recall session, interrupting the steepest decay window
- Day 10: Third session, reinforcing the longer-term trace
- Day 25: Fourth session
- Every 4–6 weeks after: Maintenance review
For songs you have already consolidated, your core repertoire, the maintenance interval can stretch further. For new songs or songs with a history of stumbles, the intervals tighten. The key is that review happens before the memory has decayed, not after. Reviewing a song you have already half-forgotten means re-learning it. Reviewing a song just as it is about to fade means reinforcing it.
Why Musicians Cram Anyway
The appeal of cramming is emotional, not practical. A long session the night before a gig provides a sense of preparedness. You can point to the hours and feel like you did the work. A 15-minute session on a Tuesday afternoon does not feel as heroic, even though it does more for your actual recall on Saturday.
Cramming also aligns with how busy musicians actually live. Between gigs, rehearsals, and everything else, the path of least resistance is to wait until the deadline is close enough to force action. The problem is that the deadline is when the practice is least effective.
The solution is not more discipline. It is a system that surfaces what needs review before the urgency makes cramming feel like the only option. What to Do Instead
One week before the gig. Identify the songs on the setlist you have not touched in more than two weeks. Run each one once from memory. No chart, no safety net. Note every blank, every hesitation, every line you swapped. These are your targets.
Four days before. Do a 15-minute session on only the trouble spots. Not the full songs. Just the lines, transitions, and changes that flagged in the earlier run. This is targeted reinforcement, not another full run-through.
Two days before. Run the full setlist from memory once. This is the Holistic pass. You are confirming that the reinforced sections now hold inside the full-song context. If a section still feels shaky, you have one more window to address it.
Day of the gig. Do not drill. A full run-through on gig day fatigues your voice and your focus without adding meaningful reinforcement to memory. Instead, do a mental practice pass. Run the lyrics in your head during the drive or during soundcheck downtime. This strengthens the retrieval pathway without the physical cost.
