Reveal Levels and Active Recall
Why hiding the chart gradually is more useful than reading it perfectly.
Reading a chart feels productive because it lowers friction. But the moment that chart is gone, the real question appears: can you retrieve the line without help?
Active recall is the act of pulling something from memory. It is harder than recognition, and that is exactly why it works.
A useful discomfort
The right reveal level is the one where you can mostly get through the song, but you still have to reach for it.
A simple progression
Start generous, then remove scaffolding:
- Full lyrics and chords
- First lines only
- Fill-in blanks
- Chords only
- Structure only
- Silent
You do not need to rush to silent. You need to keep the song just difficult enough that practice builds memory instead of dependence.
