I Have ADHD. Here Is Why Reading Lyrics Never Worked for Me — and What Finally Did.

For 30 years, Repriso's founder gigged with an iPad on stage. He had the ear and the chops, but the lyrics never stuck — even after hundreds of plays. An adult ADHD diagnosis revealed why passive reading fails and active recall finally works.

There is a photo of me on stage. Mid-song, head down, eyes locked on an iPad clipped to a mic stand. I have played this song more times than I can count. I know the changes in my bones. The audience is right there, twenty feet away. And I am not present with any of them because I am reading lyrics I have read a hundred times before.

That photo sat on my phone for years before I understood what it actually captured. It was not a picture of a musician relying on a tool. It was a picture of someone whose brain had been fighting the wrong battle.

Thirty Years of Reading and Forgetting

I started gigging young. By my twenties, I was a working musician with a repertoire deep enough to fill a night. I had the ear for changes. I had the chops for the room. But the lyrics, the actual words I was supposed to be singing to the people in front of me, never stayed.

I would learn a song, play it a dozen times, feel confident. Then a week would pass without touching it, and when I came back, the bridge was gone. Not the melody. Not the changes. Just the words. I would glance at the iPad, find the line, and keep going. The show would be fine. The audience would not know. But I knew.

For thirty years, I told myself the same story: I am just not good at memorizing lyrics. Some musicians have that gift. I do not. I compensated with an iPad, then a bigger iPad, then a more organized iPad. I built elaborate setlist systems, color-coded charts, lyric sheets arranged by key. I was not solving the memory problem. I was building better crutches.

The Diagnosis

In my forties, I was diagnosed with ADHD. It explained a lot. The scattered focus, the hyperfixations, the way certain kinds of information seemed to slide off my brain while others stuck like glue. But the piece that clicked hardest was the lyrics.

ADHD affects working memory, the mental workspace where you hold and manipulate information in the moment. It does not mean you cannot remember things. It means the way information gets into long-term memory works differently. Passive exposure, reading the same lyric over and over, is one of the least effective encoding strategies for anyone. For an ADHD brain, it is nearly useless.

Reading a lyric on a screen is a recognition task: you see the words, you recognize them, you sing them. Recognition uses a different cognitive pathway than recall. Recognition feels like knowing. It is not. When the screen is removed, on stage, under pressure, with adrenaline surging, the recognition pathway is gone, and the recall pathway was never built.

This is why I could play a song a hundred times and still blank on the bridge. I was not practicing recall. I was practicing recognition. And my ADHD brain, with its weaker working memory buffer, was especially dependent on the external prompt. Take away the prompt, and there was nothing underneath.

What Active Recall Actually Is

The term gets thrown around in study advice and flashcard apps, but the core idea is simple: you learn something by trying to retrieve it from memory, not by re-reading it. The retrieval attempt itself, even when it fails, strengthens the memory trace.1

For musicians, active recall means:

  • Attempting the next line before you look at the chart
  • Singing the bridge cold, from the first word, with no visual prompt
  • Naming the next chord before your hand moves to it
  • Running the full song from memory first, then checking the chart to audit what you missed

This is the opposite of how most gigging musicians practice. The standard approach, chart in front of you, run the song, glance down when you hesitate, is recognition practice. It builds comfort. It does not build recall.

For an ADHD brain, the difference is even starker. Recognition practice lets the brain coast on the external cue. The working memory never has to reach. The long-term memory trace is never laid down. The song feels learned because you can sing it perfectly while looking at the words, and then fails on stage because you were never actually producing the words from memory. You were reading them, fluently and convincingly, and mistaking fluency for mastery.

What Finally Worked

I built Repriso because the tools I needed did not exist. Chart apps let you organize lyrics. Flashcard apps let you memorize vocabulary. Nothing was designed for the specific cognitive task of building performance-ready song memory, and nothing accounted for how an ADHD brain actually encodes material.

The mechanism that changed everything was progressive reveal.

Step one: Fill-in-the-Blanks. Instead of reading the full lyric, I practiced with key words blanked out, the words my practice history showed I was most likely to forget. The brain had to supply the missing words from memory while the surrounding context was still visible. This was not full recall yet, but it was no longer pure recognition. It was a bridge.

Step two: First-Letter mode. Once I could reliably fill the blanks, I stripped the cue down further: nothing but the first letter of each line, plus the section headers. Now the brain had to produce almost the entire lyric from a minimal scaffold. The retrieval effort was intense. And that intensity was the point.

Step three: Stumble tracking. When I blanked on a line during practice, I marked it. Not as a failure. As data. That line would come back sooner in the practice queue. The next time I saw it, it would be blanked out again, forcing another retrieval attempt. Each attempt strengthened the pathway. Each stumble made the next attempt more likely to succeed.

This is not a system I designed for ADHD. It is a system that emerged from understanding what ADHD brains need: external structure that forces retrieval, honest feedback without judgment, and a schedule that accounts for the fact that memory decays faster when attention was fragmented during encoding.

The Science Behind Why This Works

Active recall is not an ADHD-specific strategy. It is a general principle of memory formation. But the research on ADHD and memory suggests why it is especially important for neurodivergent musicians.

ADHD is associated with weaker performance on free recall tasks, the kind where you have to produce information from memory without any external cue, compared to recognition tasks, where the information is presented and you simply identify it.2 This is the exact pattern I experienced: I could sing a song perfectly while looking at the lyrics but could not produce them without the screen.

The good news is that retrieval practice, the core of active recall, has been shown to benefit learners across a wide range of individual differences, including those with lower working memory capacity.3 The mechanism that helps everyone helps ADHD brains more, because it directly targets the retrieval pathway that passive practice leaves untrained.

The spaced repetition component is equally important. ADHD brains are more susceptible to context-driven forgetting. Material learned in one setting fails to transfer to another.4 By scheduling review sessions across different days, in different contexts, Repriso weakens the context binding and strengthens the core memory. The song is not tied to Tuesday afternoon in the living room. It survives the transition to Saturday night under stage lights.

The Stage Is Different Now

I still gig. The difference is that I do not bring an iPad anymore. My setlist lives in my head, not on a stand. When someone shouts a request, I do not scroll through a folder hoping the chart is there. I either know the song or I do not, and I know which ones I know because the readiness score does not lie.

The bigger difference is in the room. When you are not looking at a screen, you are looking at people. You notice when someone is singing along. You catch the bass player's cue. You remember why you started doing this in the first place. Not to execute a set of charts accurately, but to be present with a room full of people who showed up to hear music.

You have been using a strategy that does not work for your brain. The strategy is the problem. Not you.
